Apple IIGS: public access shell by telnet/ Output from PINE-client

Hello!

I have installed Spectrum Internet Suite enabling  TCP/IP and 'telnet'
functions on my IIGS.  I have establised connection to a number of differen
'public access shell' providers:

cyberspace.org
sdf.lonestar.org
etc

Problem is related to the terminal-software, when trying to invoke PINE or
ELM or LYNX the screen is filled with garbled characters.    I have tried to
switch between different display-settings  available in Spectrum, but none
of these gives decent output when trying to run these programs!

Anyone got a clue here?
