Update:
 A gentleman sent me a link to a recompiled version of Appleshare
for the GS. I understand that this CDEV is questionable in some respects,
but due to the nature of this pecular problem I felt it worth the try.
Here is a report:
I installed the CDEV on a GS that is connected thusly to the G3 that runs OS
X:
GS---localtalk--->LCIII on 7.1 Appleshare 58, LT Bridge ---ethernet--->G3,
and rebooted. Select Appleshare (this CDEV), select the G3 off the list of
Macs .. Now, thanks to a patch to the upper/lower case translation error in
Appleshare that is addressed in this CDEV, I now see the "Registered User"
option as a selectable option. So I do, putting in a known good user. and
password (being careful of case) and....
"No response from this server. Please try again."
....back to square one..
