If you are interested and if you can find a copy of the antique:  Windows NT 
version 3.1  (yes, 3.1 not 3.51 or 4.0) server had support built-in for the ISA 
Appletalk (localktalk aka RS422).  It was LOADED with bugs, but it worked.  
Ther is also support in Banyan Vines server for Appletalk cards, and also it 
is in early Novell (limited in 2.0, I don't think it was continued in 3.n).  
There is also the TOPS network solution which was basically a extended 
Appletalk but their cards and DOS based network system (which looked like a 
command line based chooser-like system) was cross comunicative with Appletalk 
though slightly slower then their arrangement.
