There are quite a few of us Apple II users whose ISP is a small ma and pop
operation, operating near Chicago but with local dial up numbers across
the US. The ISP is foxvalley.net, and for $15-$20 (various plans are
available), you get a dial-up Unix Shell account as well as being provided
with TCP/IP access. The owner of foxvalley is a Unix-geek, so we all have
faith that Unix Shell access will continue to be available for years to
come.
You should be able to find all the info you need, including costs and
whether a local dial-up is available to you, at www.foxvalley.net

Spectrum is a GS/OS based full-featured telecomm program that can, in a
sense, provide you with 'the best of both worlds.' You can use it to dial
up a Unix Shell acct, such as the one described above.
However, Spectrum has been updated quite a few times over the years, and
it now works to put your IIGS directly onto the net. In conjunction with
Marinetti, you can establish a TCP/IP connect to the net, using any of a
number of different connect options (dial-up, Ethernet, AppleTalk). You
could then telnet to your shell, or, you could use Spectrum and its
add-ons, to do things like e-mail (using Spectrum Automated Mailer) or web
surfing (using Spectrum Internet Suite).
Rather than describe in this posting all that Spectrum can do, please
visit the web site at http://users.foxvalley.net/~joko
There, you'll find complete descriptions, and in some cases, screen shots
so you can see what the software looks like. And, if you like what you
see, there's even a link on the web site that'll let you purchase
Spectrum online, using a credit card.
Oh, and by the way, in case you were curious...I'm typing this post using
my Apple IIGS, so yes, it's more than possible to get your IIGS online.
