I'm getting these packets with a 28.8 dialup connection. It only takes
seconds to download this newsgroup, so I can't figure how a few ascii
characters more or less would make any difference to anyone. Certainly,
anyone who's browsing the net (which must be >99% of the traffic) is online
longer and moving a lot more bits.

Are you saying that other South Africans are dialing trans-Atlantic to read
newsgroups? Or if you didn't have a friend in the telephone monopoly, what
would you have to do to read news?
