Re: Q: Harmonie & HP DeskWriter 540?

The DeskJet and DeskWriter are very different. Originally, HP intended
for the DeskJets to be used with IBM PCs, and the DeskWriters were
intended for use on Macs.

As ironic as it might sound, it's the printers intended for use on the PC,
and not the Mac, that work best with the Apple II series. As an example, a
IIe using AppleWorks can print to a DeskJet or a LaserJet, but not to a
DeskWriter (explanation below).

As far as the interface, some DeskJet models sport a parallel connection,
and some have both parallel and serial. The DeskWriters, on the other
hand, only have a serial port.

For the DeskJets that have a parallel port, of course you can use a
Grappler. Personally, I use an AE Parallel Pro with my LaserJet. There
are drivers in Harmonie that support all the popular parallel interface
cards. There is also a fast serial port driver included with Harmonie
that is used with the DeskWriter.

Printing from ProDOS-8 based software uses whatever default fonts are
built into the printer. The DeskJet and LaserJet series have built-in
fonts; the DeskWriter does not. When using Harmonie with GS/OS software,
that doesn't matter, as whatever fonts you have installed on your IIGS
(whether bit-mapped or TrueType if using Pointless) are downloaded into
the printer. But, you can't do that from ProDOS-8.

Pointless works beautifully with Harmonie and LaserJet, DeskJet or
DeskWriter printers. In fact, you'll be printing out text at the highest
resolution supported by your printer. IOW, if your printer supports 300 x
300 dpi, that's what you'll get with Harmonie and Pointless. In other
words, when using TrueType fonts on a IIGS, the printed output is going to
look just as good as if printed out on a Mac or PC.

In other words, Harmonie and Pointless work hand-in-hand. Just
beautifully.
