There is a IIGS test where you type control-option-open apple and then press and
release the reset. One of the tests is for the motherboard ram. I should have
thought of this before. An accelerator in the IIGS will provide an error
message, but otherwise it should give a good readout.  If an error occurs the
first digit is the error number. 1 is for rom  2 is ram 4 is some more ram
testing.

Having a 2nd system to test things on sure helps to narrow the problem down.
