There was a commercial place selling used commercial stuff here. When I
first found it, I thought it was great, a chance to pick up scrap for
parts and even useable equipment. I bought some non-standard
IBM-type motherboards for the memory soldered to it and was
quite happy. I went back a few weeks later, and found a small
board with an IC that I wanted and would have cost money and/or
time to get ahold of. But when I get to the cash, they start
fussing over a cable that was still plugged into this very small
board. They valued the small cable higher than the board. I
must assume that it was because they didn't know the stuff,
and a cable had some value (even though this one was not something
common) while the board was just garbage to them. In the end,
I didn't buy the board (if the cable was so important to them,
they should have remembered to unplug it before putting it
in the box), and never returned.
I imagine pricing of junk goes like that at Goodwill Stores and
even rummage sales. It doesn't matter what the value of the item,
or what the market will bear, but whether the thing looks valuable.
