Joystick Problem

I made a PC to AppleII joystick converter following the directions in the
faq's. Button 0 and 1 are working fine but im having problems with the X and
Y axis. I made the joystick adapter for regular (non auto-fire sticks) and
installed the variable resistors. I am using the calibration program also
listed in the faq's.

While leaving the joystick alone and turning the variable resistors all the
in one direction the program outputs 255 for both the x and y axis. When i
turn the variable resistors all the way in the other direction the program
outputs x=223 y=221. When I move the joystick in any direction the numbers
only change by one or two. When i run any game the character moves all the
way to the right part of the screen and is unusable. Button 0 and 1 seem to
be working.

Im using a generic PC gamepad and not a Joystick. Would that make any
difference?

Thanks
Ron
