Yes, a parallel connection can theortically be at least 8 times faster
than a serial connection as it can send 8 bits in the same time it
takes a serial connection to send 1 bit.
However, something I neglected to consider before might make even more
of a difference on the overall transfer speed. The speed at which the
Apple II can actually move data to and from the transmission hardware.
Even using a LANceGS card, which should be able to do 10Mbps or
approximately 1MBps, I don't think I've heard of anyone achieving even
32KBps transfer rates. Even my 8 MHz IIgs maxes out doing serial
transfers at about 2500-3000 cps with the serial port set at 57,600
bps using Spectrum (it is slightly faster in ProTERM).
