Well, I don't really need to say much else than what you did, Roy.

Error $0201 means that he is running out of memory as you surmised.

System 6.0.1 can be booted on a machine with 1.25MB of RAM but it
can't load any extras unless you specifically tailor your boot disk to
the program you want to run.  If you are booting to the Finder, forget
having practically any inits, CDEVs or desk accessories loaded.

System 6.0.1 is really much happier, and can be used much more
productively, with a minimum of 2MB of memory.
