An even better starting place is ftp.gmd.de, in the /if-archive directory, or
lurking around the newsgroup rec.games.int-fiction. The gmd archive's kind of
a one-stop shop for almost all your interactive fiction needs. The few things
not available there are under copyright -- in particular, the Infocom games.
Zork I, II, and III are available for free from Activision. Hitchhiker's Guide
to the Galaxy is available from Douglas Adams's website. All the others except
Shogun are available in Activision's "Masterpieces of Infocom" collection.
Shogun is no longer available (whether this is unfortunate or not depends on
your perspective. It wasn't a very good game).
BTW, there are lots of really good pieces of IF written since Infocom's fall.
Most of them are freeware and on the gmd archive.
