Not really.  It was a more a case of "we don't want you to use _our_
device driver with a third-party drive, since we haven't tested it and
can't guarantee it will work".

This was basically paranoia on Apple's part, since their driver didn't
do anything fancy and it works fine with 90% of the SCSI hard drives out
there.
