I think eventually it did get down to a little bit more than paranoia.
I've heard some of Apple's tech support calls (they're floating around
the net in various formats) where people would call in and expect Apple
to provide full support on third party programs and peripherals. And
some of the people would get quite upset when no one at Apple would
know what was going on with their program/hardware.
It'd be much easier on the techs to be able to ask a question like:
Tech: What did you use to format your Seagate hard drive with if it
isn't an Apple drive?
Caller: FWB Hard Disk Toolkit
Tech: Well, then you can call FWB at (whatever number) or Seagate at
(whatever number).
