I think the problem with the PowerMac has to do with the version of MacOS
running on each of the computers rather than anything to do with the
hardware. But I've been wrong before.

If I remember correctly, the IIgs ROM 3 motherboard had a scheme which
allowed replacing the battery without soldering, something about slipping
the twisted ends of the battery connectors over wires or a posts on the
motherboard. It might be possible to snip the wires on the old battery
leaving a bit sticking up off the board and then simply slipping on the
connectors of a ROM 3 battery.
