They do leak.  I had a watch with a lithium battery that leaked
after the cell died for a few years.  Granted, watch batteries
are thinner so will leak faster, but the same process will be
going on in a computer battery.

If it is a ROM 3, just take out the cell.  The company that
makes the battery still makes the same battery in a case
that looks exactly the same.
