That may work in your particular news reader but it certainly isn't a
standard.  I've never come across a news reader that supports it.  I
have seen news readers that recognize http:// and ftp:// and take
everything up to the first space after them as a URL, though.

Personally, my news reader doesn't support URLs between < > characters
and it makes it more difficult for me, and I imagine many others, to
select the URL to copy and paste it into a browser's address line or
to a text file for later checking.
