Resurrecting Vintage II+

I am trying to bring back to life an old Apple ii+ (48K) with dual 5 1/4
floppies and monochrome monitor.  Have DOS 3.3 Master, supposedly, but no
manuals.  It won't boot from the 3.3 master (either the original or another
copy) and just dumps me out to the * prompt.  I also have a weird display
problem where I have like 3 active prompts, and a 10 character column width
which makes everything extremely ugly.  Reset puts me into integer basic (I
think.  At least it's the > prompt.)  I've searched around in the FAQ's, but
I was wondering, aside from asking here, if there is a guide to troubleshoot
ancient systems of this type, including potential hardware problems.  Do
service manuals exist?  Thanks in advance.
