Since so much of ADT seems to be working, it looks like you probably have
a good copy. There is a way to check this using a short program which does a
checksum test.
The catch is that this check is valid only if you have not changed any of
the defaults. (Changing one or more default settings changes the settings you
see when you first start the program. The program is changed and saved with
the new settings.)
If you think you may have changed the original default settings, boot the
DOS 3.3 disk which has ADT and, at the usual Applesoft prompt,
BLOAD ADT
Do a
CALL -151
to get into the monitor (you should get the "*" prompt).
In the monitor enter
803.80D
If your ADT defaults are the originals, you should see ...

If your values are different, you can change them back by entering:

Do a Cntrl-Reset to get back to Applesoft. Save ADT

The test program is pretty short. To type it in start by entering

The program displays intermediate sums and a final sum. Check the numbers you
get against the checksums listed below:

If you do not get the values listed it would be a good idea to
re-transfer adt.dmp. (For a somewhat easier transfer, download ADT122nudmp.zip
and follow the included directions. You can find it on Ground at
ftp://ground.ecn.uiowa.edu/apple2/upl2000/Feb/ .)
Once you are fairly certain that your copy of ADT v1.22 is okay, it is
probably worthwhile to check your SSC settings. While several probably do not
matter (because they are set by ADT), some settings are not setable by ADT and
could cause problems.
First, you need to decide whether you should set your SSC for "terminal"
(printer) or "communication" (modem) operation.
The cable wiring shown in the directions for those who 'role their own'
does not appear to be a standard modem cable. It looks like a simple NULL
modem cable intended for use with ADT. (Since it's in the docs, I guess it
works; but, it is not a standard NULL modem cable.)
If you are using the cable shown in the directions, your SSC card should
probably be set for "communication" (modem) operation. This would also be the
correct setting if you are using a standard modem cable plus a Null modem
adaptor.
If you are using a standard modem cable without a NULL modem adaptor, the
directions say that you should set your SSC for "terminal" (printer)
operation.
For the other settings, here is some SSC info:

Jeanmarie's suggestion that you try connecting at 9600 baud or slower
could be part of the solution. Other things to check include:
o- On the PC, you are running adt.exe from DOS. (A DOS window under Windows95,
etc. is not satisfactory.) For example, if you normally start up in
Windows95, then, go to the Shutdown menu and do a 'Restart in DOS mode'.
o- On the PC, you have started no telecom program which is set to use the COM
port adt.exe will use.
