To give you the absolute best advice I'll suggest checking out an
appropriate newsgroup. This group is not about Macs. It is about the
Apple//. Although made by the same company these are two completely
different machines.
To answer part of your question... An external modem for your Mac (it's
not an Apple) is easy to find. Simply take a PC external modem and use a
hardware handshaking modem cable. This is the samt thing as we Apple//
folks do. Since you already have access to the net you can download your
software from the net. If you have dialup (shell) access from your Mac
you can get a program called Zterm and get a copy of Netscape from
ftp.netscape.com. If you don't have access then you are right to look
for an external CD ROM drive.
