I had some experience with the VE software, I believe it was bundled with
the AST board when it was shipped. I had a lot of fun with it but those
problems you mentioned sound familiar.
It seems to me that the software would lock up if there was a loss of
video signal, and, I could be wrong, but it might be that the software
didn't make use of some memory expansion cards...not too sure about that.
Anyways, there was a hardware mod available from one of the A2 mail order
outfits and a very nicely done, new application called Allison that
addressed the above complaints. Allison has quite a few improved features,
including full-screen or preview greyscale video capture and preview
colour video viewing and capture. The software also saves images in three
useful formats: raw data (Vision Effects compatible for colour), shr and
Preview (100 by 160 pixel image, or is it 160x100?)
The last time I looked, Alltech Electronics was offering the software
upgrade.
btw, if your IIGS has an internal fan, you'll get better results shutting
it off while you're capturing video.
