: It isn't the 5.25" drive that clicks. It is the speaker in the IIgs
: that clicks when the IIgs polls the 5.25" drive.
: Also, keep in mind that the IIgs doesn't always poll the 5.25" drive.
: Only programs that do a HandleDiskInsert command in their event loop
: will continuously poll all the drives looking for new disks. The
: Finder in System 6.0.1 does this as well as several other modern
: applications. If the 5.25" drive is being polled, you will see the
: drive light flash ever second or so.
...But the poll is so quick that you might need to turn the room lights
off to see it. Mine isn't doing it right now, but I know I have seen this
behavior on my GS at work (!). Strange, too, since the drive has no way
to tell the system if a disk has been inserted...
Hmmm...I wonder...since GS/OS does in fact somehow poll the 5.25" drive, I
wonder if there would be some way to get it to tell GS/OS when a disk is
inserted. Sensing a disk would be easy enough, requiring two switches
(one to sense the disk, one to sense the closed door), but I wonder how
one would get the message back to the SmartPort.......
