Apple ][e

While I have not touched an apple II in many years I just got my
daughter a II e as she was interested in asm and since I learned it on a
II + it seemed like a good starting point.
When I turn the IIe on it has Apple and a symbol  beside it on the top
of the screen. the floppy drive makes the familiar sound from years ago
as if it is searching for it's boot track then hangs.. I suspect that
the controler card has a problem. Any suggestion as to what it could be
otherwise, as well as how to cure it? My problem is that I played this
up as a big thing and now my daughter is rather disapointed as it does
not work..

Frustrated in Montreal....
