I disagree. Jobs and Gates both think they can dictate to
the users what to use. It is just that Gates is only looking
to dictate the software side. Jobs is dictating both software
AND hardware.

The only reason this is so is because Microsoft has
reached the level of a monopoly. But if it were Apple
with Jobs in command that were to control 90% of the
desktop, Apple might very well be the even greater
evil. Remember, Microsoft only controls the software.
There is a lot of competition in terms of hardware in
the PC market. Just look at how AMD is slamming
Intel around. Were Apple the monopoly power, what
would happen? Remember, Jobs was the one who
killed the clones and the fact that Apple COULD kill
the clones shows that in Apple's world, there IS NO
COMPETITION.

ONLY because Apple has the PC world to compete
against. Like I said, there is basically no competition
WITHIN the MacOS world.

No. I will not go back to Apple. I was one of those
users they abandoned. If the Mac were more open
with a world of compatibles to compete against and
Apple were not the sole manufacturer of MacOS
motherboards, I might reconsider. But they have
not changed their old ways.
You say Microsoft stifles competition, but there is
a lot of competition in the PC world. If I am burned
by a Dell brand Intel equipped PC, I can turn around
and buy an AMD Athlon based PC. In the PC world,
the user and the user base has the power to voice
a vote. But Apple II users know that this is not the
case with Apple. Apple itself is a monopoly in its
own world and in the Apple world, if you do not like
how Apple treats you, you can't just go to a third
party computer within the same platform. You have
to leave the platform.

I think the DV edition iMac is fantastic. But I also think
Mac users have too narrow a view of the PC world.
On the PC, Windows is not the only OS. Look at
Linux and OS/2. While yes, Microsoft does basically
control most of the desktops with Windows, the Intel
side is really very different. The fastest chips are no
longer from Intel. They are from AMD. There are many
many motherboard makers. And the architecture is
not all the same. The AMD Athlon uses a 200Mhz
bus, the same bus that the Alpha chip uses. This is
twice as fast as the bus that the Pentium III uses.
There is a lot of innovation and competition going on
here.
