This really seems similar to my problem that I had. Characters will inexplicably
be changed. File names will be on occasion be forgotten or changed without
warning, and the system will crash occasionally.

If this is the case you'll have to replace the controller. I have one that I don't
need as I swapped out the drive with a SCSI unit. If you want the controller, make
me an offer. Mine is a 40MB Vulcan Gold controller.
