Apple //e + deskjet + appleworks...

hi, i've been trying to print with my apple //e and deskjet 692C
printer..... i have an orange (the brand, not the color) printer card,
and there are 4 DIP switches.  i've tried messing with them to some
extent (i just tried it with switch 1 on, all the rest off, then with 2
on, the rest off, etc... ) , but the best i could get was with switch 3
or 4 (same results with both).  when i print a file from appleworks,
here's what happens:

if i type :

         hello, testing blah blah
         and blah blah...

it prints:

        0080hello, testing blah blah blah
        0080and blah blah...

and with dip's 1 or 2, there is some added jibberish at the beginning,
in addition to "0080" before each line.   any ideas on how to get this
working right?
