Okay, here's what I found:

-- I can only find one dip switch block on this printer.  It's on the right 
front after you take off the cover.  It has switches 1 and 6 off, the rest are 
on.   I am not POSITIVE that this printer had been used with the Apple III
that I bought, since it was found at a Goodwill-type store, but it's a pretty
big coincidence if it wasn't.  So therefore I have to assume that the dip 
switches are set up correctly.
-- The model number of the printer is A3M0025, and it says "Apple Letter 
Quality Printer."
-- My configurable cable isn't configurable enough to duplicate the settings 
you sent!  It can't combine 4/5 into 8, and it also can't swap 6/20 without 
also swapping 4/5.  Is this some special Apple "not invented here" cable?
-- From your description, I assume it takes 8 data bits.  Is that right?
-- I think I need to check on COMPLETELY reconfigurable serial cables!
