It's sort of a leftover from the early days. When the first Apple IIs came out
Apple
didn't have a disk drive for it, all programs and storage was on cassette
tape.
Cassettes are a major pain; volumn ,tone has to be right and you must start
the
tape at the right spot. There were a few other accessories that used the
cassette
port which is why I imagine they didn't remove it from later production.
