A good place to get started is the "CMOS Cookbook," by Don Lancaster. It
shows how to assembly CMOS components (including CPUs, eventually) from the
ground up.
Beyond that, go to a university library and find Byte Magazine from the late
70;s and early 80's. Look for Ciercia's Circuit Cellar. (I'm sure I
misspelled the guy's name, but it's close enough to find the articles.)
