Well, it took me a bit to get back to the ng, but thanks to everyone who 
responded.  I tried reinstalling GS/OS, to no effect.  Finally I discovered a 
couple of extensions in my system directory that I don't remember installing, 
and weren't serving any identifiable purpose.  I excised them like the 
malignant tumours they were, and the system's been fine ever since.  Special 
thanks for the ZipGS switch setting posts: the system's worked beautifully 
after a bit of tweaking.
