The ROM on the iMacs and blue and white G3s is just an OpenFirmware boot
ROM. The Mac OS ToolBox portions which used to be on ROM are now sitting in
a file on the hard drive. Since the former ROM is just a file now, it can
be changed/replaced/updated fairly easily (hence the version numbering).
Current PowerBooks still use a ToolBox ROM. Future ones might not, but
you'll have to wait for a major revision before that changes (probably).
The next "Wallstreet" PowerBooks will probably be largely the same as the
previous ones in the series. The consumer portable might well be similar to
the iMacs and B&W G3s with no ToolBox ROM.
