A possible explanation: this is a known side effect of the CloseView
INIT, which is installed automatically if you use the Easy Install
option to install System 6 on a hard drive.

The problem is caused by the application not obeying the rules for using
the shadowed graphics screen. With CloseView installed, the screen
buffers are used somewhat differently, causing the strange erasing
effect.

Disabling CloseView may fix this problem. While you're at it, if you
have a ROM 1 IIgs you should also disable the EasyAccess INIT, since it
can cause problems with software that reads the keyboard with interrupts
locked out.

Both of these files are in the System.Setup folder inside the System
folder.
