Chris,
You'll need to get a third-party hard drive formatting program in order to
properly set up your SCSI drive. All SCSI drives that shipped with Macs
had Mac ROMS on them so that they were automatically recognized. Something
like FWB's HD Tools or anything of that nature will work fine.
I have also heard of a hack you can do with the Apple's HD Setup which
forces it to recognize all SCSI drives. Unfortunately I don't know how
it's done. I've been trying to find out myself.
As for system software, it's worth while to upgrade to as high a system as
your Mac can handle. Obviously RAM is a concern. If you only have 16 megs
or something, you could upgrade to System 7.5.5 and be well off.
You should be able to download older system software from ftp.apple.com (
I think) or ftp.info.apple.com. Upgrades as well.
