For ASIC read ACIA (Asynchronous Communications Interface Adapter not
Application Specific Integrated Circuit [like the MMU & IOU chips]).

The firmware in one version of the //c was to allow an external box with
a Zilog SIO chip in it to be interfaced to the //c serial port. This box
never eventuated.
