     With today's technology, the idea should work.

     A friend came up with a fairly simple technique for significantly
improving the 'openess' of sound from stereo speakers. You attach a
cheapo speaker or speaker system across each main speaker system. Each
cheapo is connected so that it is out of phase with the speaker across
which it is placed. You may need to experiment with swapping the cheapo
leads (and, perhaps, adding a series resistor) to get the desired
effect.

     The friend says that a good place for the cheapo is nearby and
pointing upward.
