CD-ROMs: a theoretical upper limit?

I've heard of 1x and 2x, even 4x CD-ROMs being used successfully with the IIgs.
But is there a speed limit past which the SCSI controller can't keep up? Is
that why there is so little talk (I mean, none at all) about high-speed CD-ROMs
being used with Apple II's? Or is it just because there's no practical use of
having a 40x drive on a 1 mHz machine?

thanks,
