I've had very limited experience dealing with surface mount chips.
However, I will suggest that you look into replacement tips for your
soldering iron.  There are different styles of tips you can get for
standard soldering irons, some of which are long and skinny others are
square, which are perfect for desoldering entire sides of surface
mounted chips in one go.

It would be best if you had a soldering iron system that supportted
variable heat settings as the larger tips need more heat to ensure
that the entire tip is heated evenly and actually gets hot enough to
melt the solder (larger surface area dissipates heat quicker).

In addition to new tips I'd also suggest a lot of patience.  :-)
