Yes, there is a required order to the drives daisy chained off of the disk
port.
Apple 3.5 drives must be fisrt, followed by UniDisk 3.5 drives, and then the
5.25 drives. 

If you have an Apple 800K drive that is not daisy chainable then you have a
drive that was designed for the Mac and is not supported by the Apple IIs.
