Really if you are going to solve the problem systematically best if you 
could determine the integrity of the microdrive by sticking it into another 
Apple //e...

Or stick another Microdrive into the failing machine.

If someone close by has another Apple //e just pop the Microdrive into their 
motherboard and see if it works.

If the Microdrive works in another //e the problem is in the host machine 
and not the microdrive.

The problem with doing this is that if the microdrive has a problem that 
could damage the other Apple //e then you will likely end-up with 2 broken 
computers. One problem can lead to another problem.

The problem with trying another Microdrive is that the first Microdrive that 
failed (if it did) may have also damaged the host machine in such a way that 
it in turn could damage the second Microdrive.

There is also a possibility that by sticking other cards and chips into the 
host machine willy-nilly to try to solve some poorly understood problem can 
lead to other problems up to and including screwing-up everything. Other 
cards and chips may have problems too...
