Re: Piracy and a new Appleworks?
The features of a possible AppleWorks 5.2 were listed in the TEXAS II
newsletter, v7.2, April, 1998, page 4. If you're a subscriber, you've got it.
This was a primarily a bug-fix update which addressed some of the problems
encountered by people who launched from either the Finder (the GS Accessories
bug), or from plain ProDos 8 with no GS/OS (the less desktop bug).
Other minor bugs in the data base and spreadsheet were addressed as well. Our
ideas were nothing glamorous, but were primarily a way to help beginners get
started without some of the common obstacles.
While we did make an attempt to contact the product owners for permission to
develop this update, it could have been released (in a different form) without
their permission. It could be released this afternoon.
None of this is very romantic, but it would have helped a lot of
people, especially beginners. So there is no great drama here;
we're only trying to do some good.
As for AppleWorks 6.0, that definitly would have required the
permssion of the owners of at least two companies, plus a substantial
investment of money and time. That was a real long shot. We felt it was
necessary to "go for it," because if we didn't, things would just stay the
same, or (more likely) less; and that's no fun.
If anyone would like to discuss this or any other Apple II subject
with me in a positive way, please join the Apple II Mail Group by filling in
the form at http://members.aol.com/A2MG.
