The laws of Chaos Theory and my IIGS

Chaos Theory tells us that
   1. Dinosaurs cloned from DNA in amber will eventually reproduce and
eat a lot of people in a Hollywood movie, and
   2. Stuff that used to work just fine on my IIGS will eventually turn
against its master.

As far as #1 goes, that would be posting off-topic, way further even
than mentioning M*c*nt*sh. But, as far as #2 goes...

My 700 Mbyte external hard drive, connected via a RamFast SCSI card, now
sounds like it's spinning up ("wheeeeeee") from time to time while my
computer has been on without interuption. When this happens, the
computer often freezes up when I try to access the drive (get data,
save, switch apps), and rebooting gives me a RamFast Fatal Memory error
until I shut down completely, count to 10, and power up again. What's
up?

In Appleworks (8-bit), I used to be able to enter an "apple" (">") using
[oa-a] and then get high-bit ascii, such as for drawing boxes etc, using
the font set resident in my HP 550c printer. Now this no longer works.
What have I changed? I've tried everything I can think of. Hmmmm!

Thanks for any suggestions you might have.
