It is called sticktion...the drive gets stuck trying to spin from time to time.
As hard drives age, this tends to happen.  There is nothing you can do
about it except change drives and copy the information to a new one.

Actually, I have read about people modifying the drive so that a higher
voltage goes to the drive motor to compensate, but I don't know how to
do this...
