Others have wrote how to click the A2 speaker in BASIC...however,
this sounds horrid and is definitely unbefitting of an Apple IIGS which
has an Ensoniq sound chip capable of up to 32 simultaneous sounds
(outside of standard GS/OS sound tools, which support 15).
FTA made some tools that allow you to access the Ensoniq from
Applesoft BASIC. If you can find these (usually associated from the
NoiseTracker GS era) you should definitely try them. The distorted
sounds of older non-GS techniques is not good for children learning
music. I'm serious...the earlier the learn proper music tones the
more musically inclined they become later. The Ensoniq is the
only chip in an Apple II of any kind that can produce high quality
pure tones and combinations (in fact, it is the same chip used in
professional synthesizers in the 1980s).
