Rich,
I have a RAMfast and experience a similar problem. After ensuring
the integrity of cabling and termination I tracked the problem to a bad
SCSI external cable. I had verified the operability of the drive by
formatting it with my Adaptec 2940U on my PC, so I had eliminated the
problem to either the RAMfast or the cabling.
Also, I previously tried formatting an older Seagate model that
was supposed to be 160MB but my Adaptec only reported it as an 80MB
drive. When I went to format the drive I received a similar error code
(the 04 .. .. ..) and the Adaptec appended it with a "write error."
Try checking your cabling and termination. If that's not the issue
make doggone certain that your drive doesn't have a "write-protect" jumper.
Many flavours of SCSI drives have the option to be read-only with an
optional jumper.
