So if company XYZ _doesn't_ know the JoeSixpack is distributing its
software illegally over the internet, they are able to claim loss of
revenue AND begin criminal proceedings against the person distributing
the software because copyright law has been violated.

Please show me any sort of proof that the copyright holders of the
software on asimov know that asimov is distributing their software and
that they are doing nothing about it. I haven't seen a post yet
saying that company XYZ knows that their software is there and doesn't
care. Even if I did see it, it would still have to be backed up
somehow. Especially if it went into legal proceedings later.

Oh, and don't forget, even if the copyright holder does lose the
ability to claim lose of revenue, the criminal proceedings can result
in a fine up to $10,000 and/or up to one year in prison. (At least,
that is what the Infocom copyright notice says.)
