Yes, but until WDC actually MADE the chips, Apple wouldn't consider using
faster chips.  WDC saying they could make the faster chips is NOT the same
as having them in stock.

And, you have to remember, AE had to put 6.5MHz '816's on the first 
TransWarp GS's as they couldn't even get reliable 7MHz parts when WDC
said they could produce them.

In my opinion, the Apple II architecture was eventually doomed, I just
never have agreed with the way Apple 'obsoleted' the Apple II.
