I had the same problems with my IIgs and a UNIX shell, for a wile.
But then I "sx filename" and it worked just fine,
I used "Xmodem CRC" on the Apple end and used the BIN format when
downloading, even if it was a text file.
Also I had the problem with corruption, that was solved when I downloaded
binscii.exec, I found that the version I was using was for the original
Apple II's and not for the Apple IIgs, and when I got the gs version it
worked just fine.
I also use ShrikIt_GS for unshrinking the decoded files.

I can't remember where I got these files, probably from the ground server.
