     Okay; how about a messed-up drive ribbon cable-- one with a broken
or shorted line or a spot which is worn and touching the metal case when
the cover is on? Check the cable very closely for signs of serious
crimps and cuts. Also, check the connections at each end for breaks and
shorts.

     OR; look for a loose or poorly socketed IC on 1. the drive's main
circuit board  or  2. the Disk ][ Controller card. (Popping and
re-socketing any socketed IC's on the boards may help reestablish good
contact for 'loose' IC's.)

     OR; check the drive for signs of a blown electrolytic capacitor on
the drive's main circuit board.
