    Since this is a just-bought machine, you can not be sure that the
previous owner ever cleaned the drive's R/W head. Try using a Radio
Shack Head Cleaner Diskette to clean the head. (Remove the tab on the
bottom side of the Cleaner Diskette, squirt Cleaner fluid onto paper
disk, insert Cleaner Diskette into drive with bottom/open side facing
down, close drive door, and turn On the computer. Let the drive spin the
diskette for 20-30 seconds, then, open the drive door and remove the
Cleaner Diskette.)  This may get the drive working.
