The only requirement for using the Talking Tools from Byteworks is an
Apple IIgs. The Echo Speech Synthesizer was a totally separate
product that did the same thing the Talking Tools does. The only
difference is that the Talking Tools are software only where the Echo
is hardware with possibly some software to drive it.

I can't compare the output because I have never heard an Echo. I can
say that the Talking Tools tends to be a little difficult to
understand at times but I'm sure I could get used to it. It also has
a way to tell the Talking Tools how to pronounce words that it
mispronounces. You just tell it the word and give it the phonetic
version of the word and it will say it properly from then on.
